RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s outgoing military chief General Raheel Sharif has warned India that it would be dangerous to mistake Pakistan’s restraint over recent tensions in Kashmir region.

In his farewell speech, the hugely popular General Raheel Sharif spoke about achievements during his three year tenure.

In the change of command ceremony, he passed on the baton of command to newly appointed army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

“Unfortunately, in recent months, increasing state terrorism in (Indian) occupied Kashmir, and India’s aggressive steps have put the region’s peace in danger,” he said.

“I want to make it clear to India that considering our policy of restraint a weakness would be dangerous for India,” he said to applause.

“This is reality, that in South Asia, lasting peace and progress is impossible without solution of the Kashmir issue. For that, international community’s special attention is necessary,” he continued.

He urged the nation to demonstrate unity for a complete elimination of terrorism and to meet the challenge of security.

“By fighting a successful war against terror, the army changed the course of history and gave this region a new hope for peace,” he said in his farewell address.

“Throughout my service, I gave priority to the national interest and utilized all out energy of myself and the army. In this regard, I enjoyed support of the nation and the entire military. I’m thankful to them and hope that Pakistan Army will meet aspirations of the nation.”

“I’m thankful to Allah who gave me a chance to demonstrate my capabilities and meet the demands of my office.”
