brands of cooking oil, ghee declared dangerous

LAHORE: The health authorities in Punjab conducted a survey and singled out some brands of cooking oil and ghee which are extremely dangerous for health.

Reports said Punjab Food Authority (PFA) conducted a crackdown against substandard oils and later declared various brands unsafe and unfit for consumption due to absences of Vitamin A and rancidity, artificial flavour addition and other acid values.

Punjab Food Authority took samples of cooking oil and ghee for testing purpose and as a result of lab reports, the following products were found substandard due to absence of Vitamin A and low saponification value:

The brands include: Shan Cooking Oil, Shan Banaspati, Smart Canola Cooking Oil, Ghani Cooking Oil, Shah Taj Cooking Oil, Soya Supreme Cooking Oil, Kashmir Canola Oil, Cukoo Banaspati.

Other brands are: Sufi Sunflower Cooking Oil, Soya Supreme Banaspati, Olio Premium Canola Oil, Momin Cooking Oil/Banaspati, Mayar Banaspati, Season Banaspati, Sundrop Cooking Oil, Tullo Banaspati/Cooking Oil, Salovi Spanish Olive Oil, Maan Banaspati, Naaz Banaspati, Kisaan Vegetable Ghee, Malta Banaspati.

The edible oil and ghee manufacturers went on an indefinite strike across the country, halting production of their units and suspending supply countrywide against the raids of the PFA.

The strike may prolong as the association has not approached the PFA while the Authority has not contacted the Association so far to sit together and resolve the issue.
