CHITRAL: In a tragic incident on Wednesday, at least 47 people lost their lives when a PIA plane flying to Islamabad from Chitral crashed in Abbottabad district.

Initial reports said no passenger survived in the incident when Pakistan International Airlines flight PK-661 crashed in the mountainous region about 125 km north of Islamabad.

PIA spokesman said the flight lost connection with the control tower at 4:20pm and then reports came that the plane has crashed.

Reports said all of the bodies are burned beyond recognition. The debris is scattered near Havelian town.

Reports said the aircraft was on fire before it hit the ground.

Contingents of Pakistan Army and helicopters of Army Aviation reached the scene for rescue efforts.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) put the number of people on board at 47 but Sohail Ahmed, a PIA official in Chitral, said there were 41 people on board, including four crew members.

Junaid Jamshed, a well-known Pakistani pop star turned preacher and scholar, was on board the crashed aircraft.
