ISLAMABAD: Lieutenant General Qamar Javed Bajwa has been picked to replace outgoing army chief General Raheel Sharif, who earned popularity for improving the security situation in Pakistan and driving back militant groups.

Following is career profile of the new army chief:

General Qamar Javed Bajwa had served as Corps Commander of Rawalpindi. He also remained Inspector General Training & Evaluation (IGT&E), GHQ and Colonel Commandant of the Baloch Regiment). He had also led the UN Peace Mission in Congo as Brigade Command.

As Lieutenant Colonel, he served in the Rawalpindi Corps, where he was the general staff officer. As a brigadier, General Bajwa served as Chief of Staff at X Corps and has also commanded formation division in Northern Areas as formation commander. As a Brigade Commander, Bajwa has also commanded a United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Congo.

In May 2009, he was promoted to the rank of major general. As a major general, Bajwa Served as the Force Commander of Gilgit-Baltistan and held the title of the General Officer Commanding. In August, he was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz Military.

He was Commandant of an Infanty School in Quetta before he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in August 2013 and was installed as Corps Commander Rawalpindi Corps shortly after. He was Grade-1 Officer during his tenure as Corps Commander Rawalpindi Corps.

In September 2015, he was appointed as the Inspector General of the Training and Evaluation at the GHQ where he was a Principal Staff Officer to Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif.

Since Bajwa has been posted in Rawalpindi Corps thrice, he has good experience of handling affairs in Kashmir. He belongs to the infantry’s Baloch Regiment.
