NEW YORK: Yes! It’s a confirmed news that WhatsApp is about to stop working on millions of old phones.

The popular free chat app will cut off support for older devices by the end of this year.

The announcement was made earlier this year but is coming to a head as the year draws to a close.

The devices that will no longer support the app include the iPhone 3GS, Windows Phone 7 devices, and any Android lower than 2.3.

Originally, every BlackBerry phone and two recent Nokias were to lose support as well, but the company have backtracked on that – for now – giving Blackberry users until 30 June 2017 to buy new phones.

Whatsapp is popular in many developing countries where older smartphones are still in common use.

Any iPhone still running iOS6 – the highest version able to be installed on the iPhone 3GS – will lose support.

In its February blog post announcing the change, WhatsApp acknowledged how important some of those earlier devices had been.

WhatsApp has well more than a billion users and is owned by Facebook.
